The Great Lakes Science Plan for the Next Generation builds on the findings of the board's 2022 Great Lakes Science Strategy for the Next Decade (the Science Strategy).
The Science Strategy summarizes the science gaps and related resource needs identified by hundreds of knowledge-holders convened by the IJC. The summary report provides an overview of the findings of the Science Strategy project to better define science needs to understand changes in the Great Lakes for the protection of the economic, social and environmental health of the region.
The Science Strategy highlights six priority areas for new investments in Great Lakes science efforts, including:
- Basic process research
- Monitoring and long time series measurements
- Enhanced models and forecast systems
- Human capital
- Research infrastructure and Centers of Excellence
- Inclusion of broad socioeconomic and cultural perspectives
