Allen Pemberton

Allen Pemberton is a member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians. He has spent the last 36 years working with the natural resources of his reservation. In 1980 he started his natural resource career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a forestry technician.  When the Red Lake Band became a self governance tribe in 1997, he transferred to the Tribes natural resource department.  In 2001, he became Director of the Red Lake Department of Natural Resources. He oversees the natural resource management of the Red Lake Band which encompasses more land than the State of Rhode Island.  His leadership and guidance was very instrumental in the recovery of the Red Lake walleye population. Currently he is the senior member on the Red Lake Tribal Council as a district Representative for the past 17 years.

Allen is a member of the Red Lake Fisheries Technical Committee, and in 2008 he received the Glen Miller Tribal Leader of the Year Award from the Great Lakes Region Native American Fish and Wildlife Society. Allen is an active participant in the Harvard University’s biennial Honoring Nations Symposia because he believes in the mission of bringing tribal leaders together periodically to focus on the challenges of effective self government.
