Temporary Closure of Gate #1

Date

Anglers and other users of the St. Marys Rapids are advised that Gate #1, which is the northernmost gate of the compensating works structure, located closest to the Canadian shoreline at the head of the rapids, will be temporarily closed tomorrow, 9 September, to facilitate underwater safety inspections of Gates #1 and #2. The gate will be re-opened to its typical setting of 20 cm (8 in) open by the end of the day tomorrow.

Underwater safety inspections of Gates #3 through #8 were previously completed on 5 August 2020.

Gate #1 typically supplies a minimum flow of about 15 m3/s (530 ft3/s) to the channel north of the Fishery Remedial Dike. During the closure, natural resources technicians will retrieve all aquatic life that may become trapped in pools as the water recedes.  The temporary closure of Gate #1 has been coordinated and approved between the Canadian and U.S. federal, state and provincial agencies and by the Batchewana First Nation.
