Description
A Reference to conduct a study of pollution of the boundary waters of the Great Lakes System from agriculture, forestry and other land use activities.
Outcome
The IJC reported that runoff from farms and urban areas was causing a greater amount of pollution in the Great Lakes than previously recognized, and that controlling non-point pollution would require the development of a comprehensive management strategy. The recommendations addressed issues involving nutrient loading into the Great Lakes, non-point sources of pollution, toxic and hazardous wastes, and waste disposal.
