IJC invites comments on the 2008 Air Quality Agreement Progress Report
As part of its responsibilities under the 1991 Canada-U.S. Air Quality Agreement, the International Joint Commission is inviting the public to provide comments on the 2008 Progress Report, released by the Air Quality Committee that was established by the two federal governments. The Commission will synthesize the views expressed and submit a report to the governments for their use in continuing to implement the Agreement. The Commission’s report will also be made public.
The Agreement commits Canada and the United States to reduce the impact of transboundary air pollution and requires that they issue a Progress Report every two years. The most recent Progress report highlights progress made toward meeting the objectives in the Agreement’s annexes on acid rain and ozone, and also addresses public comments submitted on the 2006 Progress Report.
As part of the process of gathering public comments, the Commission is accepting written comments on any aspect of progress under the agreement. Statements can be submitted at one of the following addresses until Friday, April 24, 2009:
