  1. MINUTES
    The Commissioners approved draft minutes of the July 26, 2006 executive meeting and August 11, 2006 conference call.

  2. APPOINTMENT
    The Commissioners approved the appointment of Dr. Pierre Filion as a Canadian Member of the Great Lakes Science Advisory Board (SAB) for a three year term expiring in October 2009.

  3. THE LAKE CHAMPLAIN BASIN
    The Commissioners approved inviting Mr. Bill Howland, Lake Champlain Basin Program Manager, to Ottawa on October 19 for an introductory briefing to the Commission. The Commissioners agreed to defer until December a meeting with the Upper Lakes Study Board pending Canadian appointments but indicated their desire to review progress on the Upper Lakes Study at the October meeting.

  4. BIENNIAL MEETING
    The Commissioners held preliminary discussions regarding potential program components for the 2007 Biennial Meeting, to be held in Chicago, Illinois, in June 2007. The Commissioners:
    • expressed a desire to focus on land use and the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, which are linked;
    • directed staff to find useful opportunities for members of the public to express themselves;
    • suggested contacting the Chancellor of the University of Chicago and possibly offering invitations for one or more scholars to liaise with Commission staff;
    • suggested maps (such as from the Environmental Protection Agency showing the extent of Areas of Concern) to emphasize land effects on water; and
    • suggested showing progress in Areas of Concern such as an update to the Commission's 2003 report or the matrix on the Commission's website.
    Commissioners deferred further discussion to its October executive meeting in Ottawa.
