Gary, Indiana is the site of an IJC Area of Concern workshop being held September 25-26, 1998. The workshop focuses on the transfer of successful strategies and techniques among Areas of Concern to assist in implementation activities. To date, suggested agenda topics include examination of sustainable development strategies, an update on human health effects of persistent toxic substances, use of the Internet to enhance information exchange and use of public-private partnerships. The 5th Annual International Conference on the St. Lawrence River Ecosystem will be held at the Ramada Inn, Cornwall, Ontario, April 29 - May 2, 1998. This year's theme: "Sharing Knowledge, Linking Sciences: The St. Lawrence River - from Research to Remedies," emphasizes the increasing demand for constructive partnerships among all sectors of society that are needed to face the challenge of understanding, restoring and sustaining the St. Lawrence River ecosystem. The conference aims to attract scientists, industrialists, politicians and community members into a growing web of citizens whose health depends on a healthy St. Lawrence River. The 2nd Annual Canadian Pollution Prevention Roundtable is scheduled for May 7-8, 1998 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. With a theme of "Demonstrating Results," he roundtable sessions will focus on case studies from business, organizations and communities that describe successes and setbacks in implementing pollution prevention concepts. The Wildlife Habitat Council is conducting a Working with Wetlands and Wildlife Workshop in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 12-13, 1998. The workshop will address the techniques, opportunities, benefits and cost of wetlands management. The sessions will demonstrate the most effective and efficient means of planning and implementing wetlands restoration, creation and management projects and will promote proactive management of wetlands for maximum benefits. IAGLR 98, 41st Annual Conference on Great Lakes Research will be hosted by McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario from May 18-22, 1998. The campus setting is located in the west end of Hamilton, just a few minutes' drive from downtown, a 5-minute walk from the Royal Botanical Gardens and the waters of Cootes Paradise marsh. Harmony Foundation's 1998 Summer Program of the Institute for Environmental Values Education is again being offered in July 1998. Bringing together a diverse mix of teachers and community leaders, participants focus on global and community concerns while investigating the links among social, economic and environmental issues. The program combines environmental knowledge with tools for change in schools and communities through creative and innovative teaching strategies. This year's Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Mayors' Conference will take place July 8-10, 1998 in Windsor, Ontario. The conference is an international and bilingual association providing 650 Canadian and American municipalities, in and around the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence basin, and a forum for cooperation and discussion on issues such as sustainable development, water quality, marine transportation, tourism development and shoreline protection. Great Lakes Aquarium at Lake Superior Centre will offer three workshops for teachers K-12 this summer. The 4th Lake Superior Environmental Education Workshop runs June 22-25, 1998 in Duluth, Minnesota. Teachers in grades K-8 will "dive in" to Lake Superior education using the Aquarium's LakeEffects curriculum. Day trips to the north shore and the Apostle Islands will provide hands-on experience with Lake Superior environmental issues, while an outing on the research vessel Blue Heron will provide real-life limnology and environmental science experience. The workshop cost is $80 (housing not included).

Teachers who want to explore Lake Sperior in more depth can register for the Isle Royale Educators Adventures, July 29 - August 2. This wilderness camping program gives teachers hands-on experience with Lake Superior's natural areas in the context of the education process. Travel is not strenuous and no experience is necessary. Teachers will take a ferry out to the island and hike for four days. Topics will include geology, wolf and moose ecology, wilderness and national park management and Lake Superior education. Total program cost is $375.

August 11-13 marks the Apostle Islands Educators Adventure. Teachers will travel by safe, stable sea kayaks through the inner islands of the national lakeshore. Topics will include history of the Apostle Islands including a presentation at Raspberry Island lighthouse, geology, flora and fauna and park management. Total program cost is $330.
