The Ecological Monitoring and Assessment Network (EMAN) will host its Third National Science Meeting in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from January 21-25, 1997. Under the theme Long-Term Trends -- Consequences and Causes, the meeting will focus on long-term and multi-disciplinary monitoring and research. EMAN defines the environmental stresses affecting Canadian ecosystems, establishes scientific rationales for controls, evaluates the responses of ecosystems to existing control programs and provides an early warning for new stresses. The Seventh International Zebra Mussel & Aquatic Nuisance Species Conference is scheduled for the Radisson Hotel, New Orleans, Louisiana, January 28-31, 1997. It combines previous conferences sponsored by the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network, the Electric Power Research Institute and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The conference will present a comprehensive review of accumulated knowledge on zebra mussels and other aquatic nuisance species. Results of current research into biology, impacts and control of aquatic nuisance organisms will be presented in concurrent sessions. Companies will also exhibit products and services related to zebra mussel controls.

Computational Hydraulics, Inc. will present a one-week Stormwater Management Modelling (SWMM) Retreat February 17-21, 1997 in Toronto, Ontario with three graduated hands-on workshops on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency SWMM model with PCSWMM for Windows. In addition, the American Society of Civil Engineers Urban Water Resources Council, American Water Resources Association, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Ontario Ministry of Environment and Energy, Canadian Society of Civil Engineers and Association of Conservation Authorities of Ontario will present the Conference on Stormwater and Water Quality Management February 20-21, 1997. An International Symposium on Waterborne Cryptosporidium will be held March 2-5, 1997 in Newport Beach, California. Cryptosporidium is a significant concern because of potential impact on human health through consumption of inadequately treated drinking water. This symposium will provide a forum to exchange information on the most recent cryptosporidium research occurring worldwide and will examine future research needs. The second biennial international Great Lakes Student Summit will explore diverse issues affecting the Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem May 15-16, 1997 at the Buffalo Convention Center in Buffalo, New York. In addition to presentations, field trips, hands-on demonstrations and student sharing sessions, the conference invites students in grades 5-9 to showcase their own research projects. New projects conducted in schools, classrooms and communities during the school year are highly encouraged. Teacher workshops will also be offered. The summit is sponsored by the County of Erie and the Erie County Environmental Education Institute, in cooperation with New York Sea Grant, the Great Lakes Program at the University of Buffalo and the Great Lakes Center at Buffalo State College. The First World Conference on Breast Cancer will take place July 13-17, 1997 at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario under the title of "Break the Silence - Stop the Epidemic: Opening the Doors to Dialogue Around the World." Internationally recognized speakers on all aspects of breast cancer, an international public hearing, theater and art will accompany a diversity of plenary and breakout sessions.

Topics include prevention and environmental links, environmental law and justice, treatment, alternative therapies, genetics, ethics and law, research, ethnic issues and others.
