GREAT LAKES AREAS OF CONCERN

Annex 2 of the 1987 Protocol to the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement defines Areas of Concern as:

geographic areas that fail to meet the general or specific objectives of the Agreement where such failure has caused or is likely to cause impairment of beneficial use of the area's ability to support aquatic life.

As of January 2004, 41 Areas of Concern are identified in the Great Lakes Basin.

When the 1987 Protocol was signed, 42 Areas of Concern were identified by the Parties; several years later, an additional AOC was added to the list bringing the total number of Areas of Concern on the Great Lakes to 43.

Since 1987,

Two AOCS have been delisted (Collingwood Harbour, ON and Severn Sound, ON) and;
Two other AOCs have been designated by the Parties to be in recovery status (Spanish Harbour, ON and Presque Isle Bay, PA).
