  1. Welcome and Introductions

    The Co Chairs called the meeting to order at 8:50 am and recognized the guest speaker, Dr. Stephen K. Hamilton, Associate Professor, W.K. Kellogg Biological Station, Michigan State University. Brief self introductions then followed.

  2. Approval of the Minutes

    The minutes were approved as presented based on a motion by Deb Swackhamer which was seconded by John Braden.

  3. Approval of Agenda

    The agenda was modified to include a discussion of future speakers at Science Advisory Board meetings under Other Business.

  4. Guest presentation by Dr. Stephen Hamilton entitled "Nutrients in Waters of the Kalamazoo River System: Sources, Impacts and Sinks."

    Dr. Hamilton provided a detailed characterization of the hydrology and nutrient transport of the main stem of the Kalamazoo River. Information on groundwater flow modeling, the role of impoundments in the eutrophication of surfaces waters, the status of Superfund activities and current levels of PCB contamination in the Kalamazoo River Area of Concern were also detailed. A pdf of Dr. Hamilton's presentation is available.

  5. Old Business

    The 2003-2005 priorities report is currently undergoing a technical edit. A final edit of the report is to be completed this fall.

  6. Workgroup Reports

    WGEI- Expert papers from the 2003 workshop have run into administrative issues at the University of Toledo Law School and the Workgroup will explore publication in other law journals. Bruce Kirschner is to follow-up with the University of Toledo Law School to confirm the status of the papers. Bruce Kirschner is to coordinate with Deb Swackhamer and Allan Jones to ensure that a complete application is submitted to The Johnson Foundation for the planned January 24-26, 2006 Wingspread Conference. Criteria for screening of potential invitees are to include: management of research programs in the basin and use of research products related to the Great Lakes.

    WGEH-The Workgroup has proposed a priority for 2005-2007 which focuses on an ecosystem approach to the removal of dams in tributaries to the Great Lakes. This priority would focus on the risks and benefits of dam removal and the Workgroup plans to propose a special session at IAGLR 2006. The Workgroup has also proposed a special session at Mercury 2006 which will be held in Madison, WI in August 2006.

    WGPI-The Workgroup is leading the effort to plan a November 9, 2005 multi-board urbanization priority planning meeting. The December 1 and 2, 2005 SAB meeting will be held in Chicago and will focus on urbanization issues. Bruce Kirschner and John Braden will coordinate to plan the agenda for Dec 1 and 2. A groundwater consultation will be planned for late winter.

  7. Other Business

    The Co-chairs discussed their planned presentation of SAB priorities work at the IJC's fall semi-annual meeting.

    Isobel Heathcote led a discussion of how best to screen and decide upon future guest speakers at SAB meetings.

  8. Adjournment

    There being no further business of the Board, Allan Jones moved that the meeting be adjourned at 11:30 am, with seconding by Bill Bowerman. The motion was approved by all of those who were present.
