There’s a time-limited opportunity to download key research papers that are unlocking the mystery of what is causing algae blooms on Lake of the Woods.

Scientists working on Lake of the Woods have put together a special issue of the journal Lake and Reservoir Management (Volume 33, Issue 4) devoted entirely to Lake of the Woods – With free public assess until March 15 at this link

The Lake of the Woods special issue has 11 papers covering everything from international watershed governance to study results on algae, algal toxins, and the roles of historical and modern phosphorus loads and climate change in driving the blue-green algae blooms on Lake of the Woods.

The special issue starts with an overview of the evolution of science and international governance in this international basin, including the establishment of the IJC’s Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Board.  There is a long history of cooperation internationally among governments and stakeholders in the basin and the need for this will continue as we move from science to management actions.

The studies highlighted in this special issue note that the science of nutrient and algae dynamics on Lake of the Woods is complex. Nevertheless, the body of knowledge gained in the past decade is forming the foundation for water quality and restoration goals.

A shout-out of thanks to researchers who contributed to this special issue and particularly to Andrew Paterson (Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate Change) and Jesse Anderson (Minnesota Pollution Control Agency) for organizing the special issue and negotiating the open-access period.

Lake and Reservoir Management is an international journal of the North American Lake and Management Society. Open public access is only available until March 15, 2018, so download and enjoy now.
