The International Joint Commission will help mark the 45th anniversary of Earth Day by taking part in festivities at the MI Earth Day Fest in Rochester, Michigan.
The three-day celebration brings together organizations, vendors and educators from all over the United States and Canada. The IJC is pleased to be a part of such a large network of individuals and organizations that are passionate about our environment.
Earth Day is April 22. The MI Earth Day Fest, billed as one of the biggest Earth Day celebrations in the world, will take place from April 24-26 at the Rochester Municipal Park/City Center. Admission is free.
IJC’s participation at the event will include an informational booth where attendees can pick up information on current IJC activities and projects and speak with IJC staff about water protection in the Great Lakes basin.
Other highlights from the MI Earth Day Fest include numerous opportunities to shop, learn and celebrate. The weekend includes almost 100 exhibits and vendors and more than 20 presentations from artists and performers.
The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, and more than 20 million Americans participated. That event helped lead to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts as well as the 1972 Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.
The Earth Day Network was later created to mobilize individuals and encourage coordinated efforts. The Network has more than 22,000 partners in 192 countries. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world. Earth Day Canada also has information on 2015 activities.
