CONFERENCE CENTER

Description: Ten years ago, scientists were warning us that the most significant fresh water resource on the planet – our Great Lakes – was on the brink of a complete ecosystem breakdown. Faced with this threat, Peter Wege and other visionaries gathered in Grand Rapids, Mich. and provided the funding to start the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition. This year we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition and Peter Wege’s long and distinguished career of helping restore and protect the Great Lakes. We will celebrate some of our major victories for the Great Lakes, including our collective work to successfully secure more than 1.6 billion in federal funding to date, to restore habitat for fish and wildlife, clean up toxic pollution and control invasive species, and replace and repair aging sewage infrastructure.

Each year Healing Our Waters – Great Lakes Coalition brings together a diverse group of more than 400 people from throughout the Great Lakes region to attend the Great Lakes Restoration Conference. The conference provides a 3-day forum for participants to learn about important Great Lakes Restoration issues, network at the largest annual gathering of Great Lakes supporters and activists, and develop strategies to advance federal, regional and local restoration goals.

The conference will be held this year in Grand Rapids, Mich. at state of the art DeVos Place Convention Center. Connected to the DeVos Place is the historic Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, located in the heart of Grand Rapids and in easy reach of some of Grand Rapids’ most popular attractions. Enjoy a reception at the Grand Rapids Art Museum while listening an ensemble from the Grand Rapids Symphony, experience diverse field trips throughout the area, and feel like a kid again riding the carousel at the Grand Rapids Public Museum!

With the support of IWI funding, the IJC is working with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to apply a regional water quality model called SPARROW. The model quantifies loadings of phosphorus at key locations in the watersheds, identifies “hotspot” areas of high nutrient loading, and apportions pollution sources according to jurisdiction and human influences such as agriculture and wastewater treatment plants. The model is being used to help set phosphorus targets as part of a basin-wide nutrient management strategy with the goal of improving the ecological health of Lake Winnipeg and the Red River Basin.
