Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Working Group holds second meeting
The Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Working Group held its second meeting in Montreal, Quebec on February 10, 2010.
Working Group members reviewed comments by the public from earlier consultations on options for regulating the levels and flow of water from Lake Ontario into the St. Lawrence River, discussed current perspectives of each team in the Working Group, and agreed on the need to obtain expert analysis. The Working Group will meet again in Albany, New York in the spring.
The Working Group is an ad hoc group made up of senior representatives of the federal governments of Canada, the United States, the governments of Quebec, Ontario and New York, and the International Joint Commission. Its purpose is to provide advice in response to Commission proposals on the future regulation of water levels and flows in the Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River system.
The Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River basin is home to 12 million people and a diverse range of interests that are affected by water levels and flows, including ecosystem health, commercial shipping, power generation, shoreline landowners, recreational users of the waters, and municipal, industrial and domestic water users. Under the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909, the Commission approved the construction and operation of the Moses-Saunders Dam between Massena, New York and Cornwall, Ontario, and oversees the flows through the project.
