Federal Governments and IJC discuss Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River Working Group
OTTAWA: The International Joint Commission (IJC) met today with representatives of the Governments of Canada and the United States to discuss the establishment of a working group on the future regulation of water levels and flows of Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River.
The IJC proposed the working group in its September 4, 2008 letter to the two federal governments. The working group would include members from Ontario, Quebec and New York in addition to the two federal governments and the IJC. It would assist with developing a mutually acceptable approach to regulation, including mitigation and adaptive management.
The IJC looks forward to working with all parties to develop an approach to future regulation that is in the best interests of the entire Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River basin. Further details will be announced as they become available.
