International Watersheds Initiative
The IJC supports the establishment of ecosystem-focused watershed boards where there is local interest, in accordance with a 1998 request from the U.S. and Canadian governments. Core elements of the International Watersheds Initiative include recognizing local expertise and initiatives, and coordinating among numerous organizations within the watershed (including the IJC's board) for mutual benefit, while respecting differing responsibilities. The IJC's fundamental interest in promoting the watershed board concept is to fulfill more effectively its mandate of preventing and resolving transboundary water disputes. Watershed boards are not intended to replace or do the work of existing basin authorities or organizations.
