New Chemical Risks?
Afternoon workshop from 1 - 4 p.m.
Location: BioScience Complex
(campus map)
The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement calls for the governments of Canada and the United States to keep lists of substances known to have or potentially having toxic effects on aquatic and animal life and a risk of being discharged to the Great Lakes basin. These lists are to be continually revised in light of growing scientific knowledge. As an important element of the current IJC priority issue of investigation on human health, this workshop will explore the concentrations of various "new chemicals" found in humans and wildlife. Persistent toxic substances as well as pharmaceuticals and other chemicals found in personal care products will be addressed. Scientists studying potential risks associated with these substances will provide up-to-date information and answer participant's questions. This issue should be included in the governments' review of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.
